Can You Tint Over Factory Tint or Old Tint?
Yes, window film can often be installed over factory privacy glass, and in limited cases it can be layered over clean existing film. The right choice depends on whether the darkness is built into the glass or comes from an aftermarket film, and on the condition of any film already on the window.
Factory Tint and Aftermarket Tint Are Different
Factory privacy glass is colored glass, most often found on rear doors and back windows. It is not a removable layer of film, so we normally do not remove it. New window film can be installed over clean factory glass to make the rear windows darker or to add the performance benefits of the selected film.
Aftermarket tint is a film applied to the inside of the glass. If that film is peeling, purple, scratched, contaminated, or bubbling, removing it before applying new film usually gives the best result.
Can New Tint Be Installed Over Old Tint?
Sometimes, but only when the existing tint is clean and securely attached. Layering film is performed at the customer's request after the glass and film have been checked. Any dirt, damage, adhesive failure, or trapped air in the older layer can show through the new tint or lead to bubbles later.
Installing a second layer also changes the final darkness. Two percentages do not simply add together, so the combined result should be considered before the job begins.
Can You Make Factory Rear Glass Darker?
Yes. Many truck, SUV, and crossover owners want additional film over factory rear privacy glass. We can also help match the appearance of the front doors to the rear glass. The exact film choice depends on the factory glass, desired appearance, and how much visibility the driver wants at night.
When Should Old Tint Be Removed?
- The film has bubbles, peeling edges, scratches, or discoloration.
- Adhesive is failing or the film is separating from the glass.
- The existing film is too dark for the desired finished result.
- The customer wants the cleanest and most predictable new installation.
